5G Broadband Limitations for IP Phones and VoIP Services

Internet connections using a 5G fixed wireless router (such as T-Mobile Home Internet) introduce several known challenges with IP phones and VoIP calling. While these services can provide sufficient speed for general internet use, they are designed differently than traditional wired connections and can impact how voice traffic performs. Because IP phones rely on consistent, real time communication, these differences can lead to issues with call quality, reliability, and device connectivity.

These limitations are related to the internet service itself and can affect VoIP performance overall, not just the Level365 platform and services.

How 5G Internet Impacts IP Phones

These routers typically use multiple layers of routing (double NAT), which differs from standard routing and can limit direct inbound connectivity. This can interfere with how calls connect and stay active (SIP signaling and RTP audio), as well as how devices stay registered. Inbound traffic is often restricted to connections initiated from inside the network, which can prevent incoming calls from reaching the IP phones.

Gateway Limitations and Impact

In addition, these gateways have several limitations that directly impact call and device performance:

  • No bridge mode - cannot provide a true public IP, which affects SIP routing and can cause registration issues or prevent inbound calls from reaching phones
  • No port control or firewall tuning - limits proper handling of audio (RTP) traffic, resulting in one way audio or no audio
  • Short NAT session timeouts - can cause phones to unregister or calls to drop unexpectedly
  • Dynamic IP addressing only - may lead to inconsistent registrations or intermittent connectivity issues
  • Cellular network variability - signal strength and congestion can introduce latency, jitter, and packet loss, causing choppy or delayed audio
  • No QoS control - voice traffic cannot be prioritized, which can degrade call quality during network usage

Recommendation

Because of these factors, 5G internet is generally not recommended for primary IP phone use. Level365 continues to evaluate and implement ways to help mitigate these limitations. However, since they occur at the ISP level, there is often little to no direct impact that can be made from the Level365 platform side. As an alternative, the Level365 desktop softphone can be used on PC or Mac which may perform more consistently.
